Polycom's NetEngine 8000 MultiService Access Device System, NetEngine 3300D and NetEngine 3300R Router Interoperate with Promatory's IMAS Fremont, Calif. - March 13, 2000 - Promatory Communications, a leading developer of next-generation broadband access systems, today announced successful interoperability testing of Polycom Inc.'s (NASDAQ: PLCM) NetEngine 8000 MultiService Access Device System, NetEngine 3300D and NetEngine 3300R Router with the Promatory IMAS (Intelligent Multiservice Access System). Working in concert, the Promatory IMAS and Polycom's customer premise equipment (CPE) provide advanced Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities that enable service providers to provision premier broadband data solutions. In addition, Polycom has joined Promatory's Toll Quality Voice (TQV) program, which is dedicated to ensuring voice and data QoS in DSL networks. The Polycom NetEngine 8000 Multiservice Access Device System can accommodate four to twenty-four POTS ports and works with the leading voice gateway platforms. When joined with Promatory's IMAS, the result will be a powerful, flexible and reliable end-to-end solution for both voice and data services. "Polycom's innovative CPE technology goes beyond the standard bridge/modem model to deliver next-generation, full QoS integrated broadband voice and data services for small to medium-sized business customers," said Tim Waters, vice president of marketing for Promatory Communications. "Polycom's equipment has advanced Frame Relay-to-ATM Internetworking functionality that complements Promatory's IMAS. Leveraging these features, we can offer our service provider customers a way to seamlessly upgrade their broadband subscribers from traditional Frame Relay service to advanced IMAS-based ATM services with QoS." "By verifying the interoperability of our NetEngine equipment with the IMAS, Promatory helps us expand our market opportunities considerably," said David Adleman, director of business development for Polycom's Network Access Products division. "Promatory's IMAS-with its ATM switching fabric and full QoS support down to a per-VC basis-and their AutoDSL easy provisioning software modules are recognized throughout the industry as a leading solution for driving premier network services." Promatory's IMAS-Intelligent Multiservice Access System-is a next-generation carrier-class broadband access system that combines support for multiple DSL transmission types with high capacity ATM switching. By integrating ATM switching and DSL access, the IMAS lets service providers implement extensive QoS for data, voice, and video applications. The IMAS implements QoS on a per-VC basis at the point ATM traffic enters the DSL access network. In addition, Promatory recently announced the availability of IMAS Easy Provisioning a new group of software modules for its flagship Intelligent Multiservice Access System (IMAS). IMAS Easy Provisioning, equipped with a simple point-and-click interface and potent functionality, greatly simplifies and accelerates customer provisioning, and improves reliability and manageability of large-scale DSL deployments for network service providers. The initial software suite comprises two modules: AutoDSL Software and Enhanced SVC Software. The Polycom NetEngine 3300D and Polycom NetEngine 3300R are uniquely designed to provide access to emerging high-speed SDSL data services. The Polycom NetEngine 3300D replaces CSU/DSU products and lets the user change to SDSL technology without compromising past CPE investments. It supports Nx64 Kbps data rates up to T1 and E1, making it an ideal network access point with simple migration from traditional leased line or Frame Relay services to SDSL. For new SDSL service customers who do not yet have a router, the Polycom NetEngine 3300R Router, which supports both transparent bridging and IP routing, is the ideal choice for SDSL Internet Branch Office connectivity. Management is made simple with the user-friendly menu interface that is available direct via console, or over the SDSL link using Telnet SNMP management and TFTP. The Polycom NetEngine 8000 is a modular multiservice access device that functions as an ATM access appliance, multiport DSL router and IAD, among others uses. The flexible design includes a built-in 10BaseT port and four option slots to accept one of the many Network Interface Modules, including SDSL, ADSL, 10BaseT Ethernet, USI (Universal Serial Interface), T1/E1 CSU/DSU, ATM25 and POTS. These modules can be mixed and matched to provide a nearly endless array of network access options.
